Those photos were amazing. If I could say anything to my younger self, I would pull that little freckle faced, people pleasing, anxious girl aside and tell her to pursue the singing, dancing, and acting she always wanted to, because it's what made her light up and gave her the neck tickles, and that feeling never goes away. I would tell her that she IS very smart, that she CAN do great things, and that her extremely controlling mother won't rule her forever. I'd make her promise she was going to rebel, even a little bit, so that her life would end up being her own and to never give up. :)
If I could talk to my younger self, I'd tell her to stop being a people-pleaser! You don't have to be who your parents want you to be. Go out and discover who YOU are!
I'm never really sure what I would say to my younger self other than, what you are experiencing now will not be what you will experience forever. Keeping that in mind has helped me through a lot of life. I didn't end up getting flowers for myself, but I did buy some beautiful flowers for a friend who was recovering from surgery. Thank you for everything you do Kevin. ❤️
Hey 16-17 year old me, here's the advice from yourself at almost 40:
1) Don't wait for anybody, ever. You got ONE chance at this life. You're only accountable to your own conscience.
2) People will surprise you. Delight and heartbreak, both. Don't get so comfortable with ANYBODY that you forget to be curious, because you don't *know*.
3) Practice unmasking. It's OK to do it when you need to, when it's helpful, advantageous. But make sure to prioritize *you time* because you are your own best friend.
I am late to this, but I'm gonna get flowers ASAP. Thanks Kevin. You're doing the Lort's work on this thang.
That last flower is beautiful! I was a teenager in the mid 80s so there was lots of big hair🤣. I would tell myself to not be afraid to venture out. I never went far, leaving New England seemed exciting but scary. I was going to go to Cancun with a friend and chickened out. Chickened out again after planning on going to Ireland for an extended stay with the same friend. (In all fairness she was super flaky and wild.) Who knows what could have happened. I applaud you though, for your adventurous spirit traveling to NYC so young. I truly wish I had traveled more when young and carefree. Of course I still did plenty of stupid things right here.
