Hello my dearest Shamala Hamalans. I’m writing to you from the green room of my show tonight in Detroit Michigan. This place was the very first place that put my picture up on the wall. Here it is:
That seems like so long ago now. I asked people to tell me what they would say to themselves if they could go back in time and talk to their younger selves. In a way, so many of your answers were the same. They were different of course, but they were the same.
Same in the way of how when you are young you don’t yet know how to demand to be treated. What sorts of things you won’t put up with. You haven’t been around the block yet. You also might have felt like you needed permission to do… well… almost anything… Actually that’s one that’s hard to shake and many of us carry that into adult hood.
It made me think about another common experience… at some point your dreams change. usually. Not always I guess. But the thing you thought you wanted most when you were 20 is almost never the thing you actually want at 40. Why do you think that is? I would love to hear what that transition was like for you. Was it difficult or easy? Was it a clear instant moment or a long slow drudge? (That’s what it was for me.)
You can always reply to this email or comment below on substack. But best of all would be to record your answer here so that I might use it on next week’s show.
Here’s this week’s Call Kevin:
I wanted to remind you that whatever your dreams are or aren’t, to be easy on yourself. The world is a tough complex place, and you are a soft creature in it. Embrace your fragile nature. It’s beautiful. Breathe easy.
a couple little updates:

I don't know if I had a real dream when I was a teenager (when it was the 90s!)...get married, have kids...it was what good Christian girls did....I got married at 20 and got a degree in music and taught piano and homeschooled my kids for a dozen years....then I developed a dream (also deconstructed faith) went back to grad school at 40 and got my masters in social work last year....on my way to becoming a therapist. (Still homeschooling the teens too).
SHAMALA HAMALA KEVINNNNNNNN!
Love your stories, personality, All of that! Just wanted to say HAIIIII!
