What is Community?
It’s a thing we’re all talking about. To me it’s one of those words that sound like “work.” How you need to “show up” and “donate your time” But I’m thinking a lot about how it doesn’t have to be that. You don’t have to feel obligated. I think when we are part of a community it can feel easy and nourishing. You can just be in it.
You might not know I’m an introvert, and I keep a pretty small circle of friends. I don’t “need” as much social interaction as some.
But that’s not really what community is.
I chose to move to this neighborhood in Cincinnati because when I was looking for a new home, this place was at the top of the list. Because there’s a vibrant arts community (there’s that word again) here that I’ve been involved with for years. I always feel like I’m apart of something here. That I belong. Even if I’m not socializing.
Can you share with us what makes you feel like you belong? It can be whatever it is and however simple. For me any sort of gathering with food does the trick. Gives me that “home” feeling.
I’ve been constantly thinking about how I can use my platform to inspire connection, belongingness, and…. yes community. I’m actually looking into renting a storefront here in Over The Rhine for various events including a Sunday non-religious gathering.
And even if you don’t live in the area (I know most of you don’t. Some of you are tuning in on the other side of the world.) I’m thinking of ways to live stream the events so you can watch from anywhere.
Here’s the idea:
And here’s a little more:
Here’s this week’s Call Kevin:
Hope you have a wonderful week. And if you have any thoughts or suggestions about my Shamala Hamala event space storefront in Cincinnati I’d love to hear.

For me there is a difference between being “welcomed” and “belonging.” Being welcomed means that people let me into a space. Belonging means that people know me, know my story, and value me and my contributions.
I would not be opposed to making t-shirts for the Church of Kevin (working name) and also for those of us who have deconstructed from religion (any religion!) and call it Former Church Kids United (FCKU)...something about it being almost a curse word really scratches an itch.
